To save money, which is extremely important in today’s economy, many people are choosing to do a lot of their jobs around the house themselves. They are learning carpentry, electrical, carpentry and many other skills, often from friends and family members, so they can save as much as they can, because it can get pretty costly to have someone come in and do a lot of jobs.
Now, a lot of people need storage sheds, and they can’t afford the cost of a pre-fabricated one or one that has been built for them, so, they decide to go out and build one themselves.
If this is something that you are considering doing, you are going to save quite a bit of money, but, you also need to know what you are looking for when it comes to supplies and materials.
There are some things that hardware store employees will not tell you, because management has ordered them to try and sell customers the most expensive items in the store. So, when you ask many employees which materials you should be using, you may be told that you need to have the very best oak or maple, or some other expensive wood, and that you will not be able to get the job done without the latest, top of the line tools.
Sadly, there are many people who actually believe this, and end up spending more money than they would have if they had gone out and bought a brand new storage shed that is already built.
It is quite understandable why store management encourages this behaviour. If they are not making enough profit, they risk going out of business because they are not able to pay for their stock, payroll, bills and other expenses. So of course they are going to try and sell the higher priced items. But, these are not always the things that you need.
For example, a hammer is pretty much a hammer, and does it really matter if you get one that is $5, rather than one that costs $25?
You will also need to buy wood for your project, and again, the sales clerks are probably going to suggest that you buy expensive woods that you don’t really need. Obviously, you are going to want something a little bit better than flakeboard or something like that, but, simple pine will do just nicely for building a backyard shed.
Of course, there will be tools and materials that you won’t want to skimp on, but you will probably already know what you need to get the job done, and you won’t be swayed by any pretty packaging or other sales gimmicks to get you to buy the things you don’t really need.
Just buy what you need, and you will be saving a lot of money, and getting the shed you need for extra storage. Building a shed is a quick and easy project, and one that does not have to be expensive at all.
